I went to the Morris Museum today to see a new exhibition of John Dos Passos's work. He's a modernist writer and painter.
His paintings show very rough lines (a result of not using enough water on the brush) and a lot of messiness in his brush strokes. At first I though this was strange; it looks almost like the efforts of an artist who has little to no experience. My first few attempts at using gouache paints looked somewhat like that, but after two months of practice I can form a pretty solid line and blend fairly well.
